Tim Welch has been an educator for the past 30 years. I began my career as a bilingual instructor teaching 3rd grade at Greenwood Elementary School in La Grande, Oregon for nine years. Then, in 1995, I had the opportunity to work with Eastern Oregon University on an NSF grant. We developed a program for K-12 teachers to help improve science instruction. The program PEERS (People Exploring Ecosystem Resources as Stewards) focused on using inquiry-based projects to provide a rich context in which students explore ecosystem issues. Student interest drives the inquiries which students pursue. Evaluation of learning comes from the project displays and presentations that collaborative groups produce to summarize their learning.

Sound familiar? In this new millennium, educators have a huge focus on collaborative, inquiry-based, projects. It is a proven educational pedagogy that improves student interest and learning outcomes.
